Court Day Checklist

A checklist for the day of a court setting in Texas, so the morning is calm and nothing is forgotten.

The setting

The night before

  • Confirm the date, report time, courthouse, and room on the notice
  • Set out clean, conservative clothing
  • Gather a photo ID, the case number, and every court notice
  • Charge your phone and plan to silence it inside the courtroom
  • Arrange time off work, school, or childcare
  • Map the route and plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early

What to leave at home

Courthouses screen everyone at the door. Weapons are prohibited on government court premises, and many items are not allowed past security.[1] Bringing only what is needed makes the morning faster.

  • No firearms, knives, or other weapons
  • No open food or drink
  • Limit bags to what is necessary

Notes for the day

Write down what to remember, and any questions for the lawyer.

If you represent yourself

The Texas Judicial Branch publishes self-help resources for people without a lawyer.[2] Anyone can confirm a Texas attorney’s license and standing through the State Bar of Texas.[3]
